What to look for

Walk your trees. Look at pods, leaves, stems, and flowers. You are looking for anything that is not healthy.

You don't have to identify it. Just capture what you see. The system and our scientific partners do the rest.

Healthy is the baseline

Healthy pods are smooth and evenly coloured, green, yellow, red, or purple by variety, with no lesions or deformities. Know healthy, and the problems stand out.

Watch for

Field guide

Four things to know on sight. Match what you see, close is good enough.

Black Pod Disease

Reference photos · swipe to see more

  • Brown or black lesions on the pod, usually starting at the top or bottom.
  • Spreads fast. Can cover a whole pod in a week or two.
  • May show a white dusting of spores and a fishy smell.
Most common in the wet season

Witches' Broom Disease

Reference photos · swipe to see more

  • Bushy "brooms" of swollen green shoots.
  • Deformed, strawberry-shaped pods.
  • Dried brooms may show small pink mushroom-like growths.

Drought & Nutrition Stress

Reference photos · swipe to see more

  • Wilting or drooping leaves in dry periods, with early leaf drop.

Nutrient deficiency · NPK

  • Nitrogen. Older leaves go pale and uniformly yellow, weak, slow growth.
  • Phosphorus. Older leaves dull, with reddish or purple tints and dead tips.
  • Potassium. Yellowing then brown scorch along leaf edges and tips.
!

Cocoa likes shade. An exposed, struggling tree in full sun may be sun and water stress, not disease.

Pests & Damage

Reference photos · swipe to see more

  • Visible insects on pods, shoots, or leaves. Chewing damage, holes, or scarring.
  • Mealybugs: tiny insects in a white, waxy, cottony coating.
  • Fine wood shavings on the trunk can mean boring beetles.

Not sure what it is? Capture it anyway. Every report is reviewed, and uncertain ones go to the UWI Cocoa Research Centre.

Using the app

Four steps

From home, tap "Capture what you see" and follow four steps.

You get a Report ID. Find it later under My Observations, where experts reply.

After review, a card shows what the Cocoa Research Centre confirmed or corrected, with a note from the reviewer.

A good photo

A clear photo is the most important thing you can do. A good one can be identified. A blurry or distant one often cannot.

Do

  • Fill the frame.
  • Hold steady, in focus.
  • Good daylight.
  • Show scale (hand or coin).
  • Close-up plus a wide shot.

Avoid

  • Blurry or far shots.
  • Dead, dried plants.
  • Cluttered backgrounds.

In the field

No signal? No problem

You can capture anywhere, even with no internet. Capture freely, nothing is lost.

Submit offline and you'll see "Saved, will upload when you're back online."

A gold banner on the home screen shows how many are "waiting to upload."

When you get signal, they send by themselves, "uploaded."

This Policy is governed by the laws of Trinidad and Tobago, including the Data Protection Act 2011 (Act No. 13 of 2011) and any subsequent amendments. You agree that you will not, during your use of the Platform and for a period of three (3) years following the termination or expiration of your access:

This covenant is reasonable in scope and duration given the unique nature of the Platform and the substantial investment required to create it. The covenant survives termination of these Terms.
